Regular Alcohol Consumption
The Topiwala et al. (2017) 30-year BMJ study found even "moderate" drinking (14+ weekly units) associated with higher odds of hippocampal-volume marker differences. Alcohol intake is often discussed alongside sleep quality, cortisol, and BDNF-related pathways. The study did not identify a protective association for brain-volume markers at the intake levels reviewed.

Caffeine and Sleep Context

Moderate caffeine (1–2 cups) shows neutral-to-positive effects on attention. At 4+ cups daily, caffeine may influence stress-response markers for some people, may affect sleep quality when consumed later or at higher intakes (the phase when hippocampal memory consolidation occurs), and produces adenosine receptor upregulation that is discussed in relation to adenosine receptors, glutamate pathways, and cognitive-health research. The blood glucose spikes from sweetened beverages generate advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that cross the blood-brain barrier and are discussed in relation to oxidative-stress and cardiometabolic markers. A study in Neurology by Cherbuin et al. found habitual high-sugar beverage consumption associated with hippocampal-volume marker differences on MRI at midlife — in midlife study settings. Sleep Architecture and Memory Consolidation in Alcohol Users — Alcohol may influence REM sleep and slow-wave sleep — the two phases during which memory consolidation is actively studied. Colrain et al. (2014) in Neurobiology of Learning and Memory documented that even one to two drinks before sleep produced differences in memory-consolidation markers, independent of next-day subjective sleep quality. The implication: people who drink "normally" may be experiencing sleep-related memory changes before noticing obvious issues.

While standard vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is found in many supplements, the tocotrienol fraction found in tree nuts has demonstrated distinct antioxidant-related properties that tocopherol alone does not replicate. Anthocyanins stimulate the BDNF that alcohol suppresses. Lutein neutralizes the reactive oxygen species that sugar-driven AGEs generate in hippocampal tissue.
